I have never been to Africa but always wanted to go. My family warned against it and have it drilled in my head that is not safe. My husband said we can go together some day but I want to make sure the country I choose is safe. I know some areas of Africa are bad to visit but it seems mostly, it is fine and safe.
Overall, yes it is one of the safer places. I would say that Mauritius, Ghana, and Botswana are better however in terms of safety and attractions. If your heart is set on Gambia though, do not hesitate to go. It is a beautiful place!
