Someone told me that Kenya is very serious when it comes to plastics. If you arrive to their airports and you have anything that is considered single-use plastic on you or in your bag, you will discard it and fine you for it. Some of the things I was told include plastic water bottles and plastic bags. Straws are a given unless they are reusable.
Just to give you an ideas of how serious they take it, if you are caught producing, selling, or using plastic bags - you can face up to £31,000 in fines as well as up to 4 years in prison. I believe the laws are more lenient on tourists but they still will fine you if they find anything in your luggage that is considered one-use.

Oh my... That is insane! I am sure glad I asked about this on here. I would be in quite the pickle and it would be over something stupid like a straw, I am telling you!

They likely do this so they don't scare too many people away.
