I know last month there were some massive protests with casualties between people and law enforcement. I am wondering if it is still an ongoing issue and if tourism is not a good idea right now for travelers. My boss had mentioned going at the end up the month and if there are safety concerns, I want to make sure he knows about them.

Generally, protests don't involve tourists. The local law enforcement will often guide you around and away from demonstrations if they start as they do not want anyone getting hurt from other countries. You can get updates if any area is shut down due to a protest but it is very unlikely.

Oh, I was not aware they did this. I guess it makes sense. They don't want something happening to someone from another country and having to get involved with a government dispute.
