I heard that there have been issues with droughts and it is frowned upon to waste water, they encourage people not to even buy bottled water but rather drink from taps. I have also heard of people getting sick from local African water but I am not sure if this was in South Africa or another area. Is tap water safe to drink in this zone?

They have clean taps, yes. You do not have to worry about drinking or cooking with the water straight from the tap. It is cleaned and treated. If you want to be extra sure or you have any doubts, just invest in a travel bottle with a built-in filter. They don't want people drinking bottled water in Africa, for the most part, because plastic is wasted.

Good news then! I know a lot of places in Africa have some pretty dodgy water sources and you shouldn't make use of them but knowing they have clean taps makes me happy. One less thing to worry about!
