Is the currency exchange rate at the airports really high?

I have been told to never exchange currency at airports in Turkey because they charge a lot for money exchange. I have heard it was 5% just from the commission and then you pay on top of that.  Is this true? Should this be avoided?

Yes, they are much higher at airports. I have experienced this first hand. If the commission prices don't get you, the fees are sure to drill a hole in your wallet! You are better off exchanging enough for a taxi and exchanging the rest when you reach your destination.

That is a handy tip! I would not have thought of this myself and have likely been walking out of the airport not even considering it and having to go back in! I will keep this in mind for my trip for sure.
